Built in oakland, ca, the alki was originally gasoline powered. At that time, it was dubbed "the world's largest fireboat" and "the most powerful firefighting vessel of its kind". In 1947 it was repowered with two gm 500 hp supercharged diesel engines that remain today. When it was repowered, the original pump capacity was increased from 12,000 gpm to 16,200 gpm. In 2002, after a large fire in seattle on lake union where thirty vessels were destroyed, firefighting authorities decided to permanently station the alki fireboat on the lake, because it takes an hour for a fireboat to traverse the locks between the lake and the puget sound. The alki currently resides in bellingham, wa. The alki was sold by the seattle fire department through an auction in 2013, to a private party and the vessel was moved by water under her own power in 2013 to la conner, wa. The alki was then resold to another private party in 2013, and she remained in la conner, wa. Due to non payment of moorage, the port of skagit secured ownership. The vessel was then re-sold to another private party in june 2014, and moved to bellingham, wa where she resides today. She is presently registered with the state of washington, and has a washington state title., functionality, pumps, valves, tankage mv alki is fitted with a loop fire fighting system. Individual byron jackson four-stage 2,700 gpm fire pumps powered by two tandem mounted detroit diesel 6-71 engines are connected to individual sea chests with manual gate valves. These individual pumps supply sea water to an engine room deck head mounted loop fire main which is fitted with low pressure hydraulic operated isolation valves. Connected to this loop system are the deck mounted fire monitors, bow under wharf fire nozzles, bow thrusters and stern thrusters. Water pressure within the system is controlled manually by throttle settings for the individual fire pump power plants. The propulsion system bow and stern thrusters are pilothouse controlled after start-up., the mv alki is also fitted with six (6) individual fire pumps powered by diesel engines. On deck is six (6) manually controlled deck mounted pedestal and swiveled fire nozzles, remote controlled 4,000 gpm fire monitor on the house top and seven (7) manually controlled 2,020 gpm fire monitors for a total potential of 16,200 gpm., the total fuel capacity is 8,290 gallons and the alki is equipped with a fuel transfer system which enables her to refuel other boats out on the water.
